On November 19 and 20, 7:30 PM, at First United Methodist Church in Bend,
The Central Oregon Mastersingers will present two large sacred works for chorus and orchestra: "Dixit Dominus" by George Frederick Handel, and "Missa Cum Jubilo" by Maurice Duruflé.
"Dixit Dominus," written when Handel was studying in Italy in his early 20s, exhibits a wealth of youthful exuberance, Italian styling, and precocious technical mastery that already marks him as one of the most important composers of his generation.
"Missa Cum Jubilo" is a seldom heard setting of the Catholic Mass for men's chorus, organ, and strings. Many would agree that this work is as moving and poignant as Duruflé's more familiar "Requiem," while the texture of the unison men's voices makes the music even closer in spirit to the medieval liturgical chant which was the source of inspiration for nearly all of Duruflé's music.
Several shorter works for women's chorus will feature the sopranos and altos of the Mastersingers.
Members of the Central Oregon Symphony will take part in these performances of music that has never before been heard in Central Oregon.
